The following Report was issued on behalf of the School by the Derek Hicks & Thew Partnership, architects:
Works Commence:
On 2nd September 2002, following approval from the Department for Education and Skills works commence on the redevelopment of the school facilities. The works are scheduled for final completion in May 2004.
Phase One: Conversion of existing Library and Old Blues Library into new sixth form accommodation (see photos 1-3)
Phase Two: Construction of new build facilities including, 10 new science laboratories, new sports facilities, new design technology classrooms, new dining facilities, new staff facilities and new administration facilities. The new facilities will also provide a modern new entrance to the existing school from Church Road in the location of the old sixth form centre.
Phase Three: Conversion of existing North, West and Central Wings of the existing school to upgrade existing accommodation. Involves new mechanical and electrical services, increased sizes of classrooms and new circulation routes on existing flat roofs to the internal courtyard.
Progress to date: Following setting up site the contractor has now completed the removal of all the existing trees on site and has now completed the demolition of the existing buildings and removed most of the existing building material. Works will now begin on excavating the site for the foundations and drainage, with the steelwork frame due to begin arriving on site late October. At this time the size of the new building will become apparent, an exciting time for all!
Existing School: The existing school buildings are highly regarded architecturally with an architectural critic calling the building `without doubt the most spectacular building in Wavertree and one of the most spectacular half dozen of its date in Lancashire' (Nikolaus Pevsner). Who can disagree?
