Selside and Highfield

Turn left at the crossroads into Olive Lane. A hundred yards along, on the right-hand side, are two large and very distinctive brick-fronted Victorian houses, built in the 1850s. At the 1861 Census the first of these (which has the name Selside on the gate-pier) was home to Thomas Carter, a 'window-blind manufacturer employing 5 men and 2 boys'. The second (Highfield) was the home of John Lewis, a 'fringe manufacturer'. Successive editions of Gore's Directory indicate that these two families remained in residence for many years afterwards.
