November 2002:

PROJECT REPORT No.2
(continued)

Architects:
Architects are the designers of buildings, and the administration of how their designs are transferred to the built form. Their role is ever changing as the construction industry adapts to new technology and requirements. They are the building industries 'Jack of all Trades' needing to know about every aspect of a building construction, ranging from design to construction law and project management. They co-ordinate all other building consultants. Historically architects produced hand drawn drawings but now designs in 2 and 3 dimensions are rapidly produced using computer software as in the image above. In fact our offices only have one drawing board (which is vary rarely used). Architectural education involves a three year degree followed by a year in an architectural office. Following this a two year post graduate university course is undertaken and another year in an architect's office and finally a professional examination is taken to become a qualified architect which is a title protected by law.

If you wish to know more about training to become an architect contact the Royal Institute of British Architects NW Region on 01565 625927.
