NOTES TAKEN AT THE PUBLIC MEETING, 24th May 2001 (continued)

Question: What kind of theme is there to the building? It's copper, with square windows and cedar cladding. In ten years time we'll say 'that's a copper building, it was designed around 2001'. Where's the precedent in the existing building for cedar? I'm concerned at the lack of detail on the entrance wing, which should be the most important part of the building.

Answer (TP):
We've tried to pick up some of the verticality and proportions of the existing building. The intention is to use panels of patinated copper to emphasise the verticality. An open elevation has been kept for the dining and sixth-form area. We've tried to keep away from copying or competing with the existing building.

Question: It wouldn't be a major task to modify the plans. Couldn't this be done?

Answer (TP): I accept that you're entitled to your opinion. (PH): English Heritage are involved on the Steering Committee, so I'm sure the concerns you have will be considered.

Mr Hallows concluded by outlining what will happen next. Trevor Powell will take the Governors' concerns regarding the entrance area and the cladding materials into account. In early June the revised plans will be discussed, and the planning application will be submitted. Then everyone will have the opportunity and statutory right to comment.

Mr Healey thanked everyone for coming, and closed the meeting at 8.25 p.m.
